PROTEA VIDEO CLUB
The club was founded in 1992 by Tony Abegglen and Bill Woods as the “Hottentots Holland Video Camera Club”, which met monthly at the Strand library. Even in those days of analogue editing on two VCR’s (“Two finger Editing”) members were keen to get involved in making club productions, which resulted in the club winning numerous awards.
By 1998 the club was renamed the "Helderberg Camcorder Club". Computer editing and digital video cameras were slowly becoming affordable to the amateur videographer and it was the beginning of NLE (Non-Linear Editing). The club was sadly disbanded in early 2003.
A few months later, a group of enthusiasts from the ‘HCC’ formed the “Protea Video Club” (PVC), and met every second Saturday of the month at Budget Rent-a-Car offices near Cape Town International airport.
The PVC has kept up the spirit of being keen competitors and until recently, has organised and presented the only National Amateur Video competition in South Africa, “The Protea Awards”. Individual members have won several international awards in video competitions - the Czech Republic, the UK Cotswold competition and the “Ernie” Awards in Morecambe, to name but a few.
In recent years the PVC embraced some of the latest technology and social media platforms such as Google Drive, Facebook, Youtube, and its own membership website. We have also broadened our membership base by accepting associate memberships from enthusiasts anywhere in the world.
The aim of the club is to encourage and empower members to:
-
Learn how to make videos,
-
Share knowledge and expertise with like-minded people,
-
Participate in club activities.
We encourage members, experienced or not, to bring along their videos for club members to view and give constructive critiques. Videos may be any length, but a maximum of 15 minutes is viewed at any one sitting.
This has proved to be an excellent way to pick up pointers, no matter how experienced one is.
The important point is that members should participate in club activities and improve by learning from experience.
